Hesitation after idling in gear....HELP

96 Metro 4cyl automatic...The engine stumbles and hestiates if I idle in gear for a minute or so (like waiting at a red light) Otherwise the car seems to run fine. Plenty of mid to high-end power (for a Geo) Stop and go traffic is no problem, but a short wait at a light causes the problem (BUT NOT ALWAYS)
I replaced the Platinum plugs with regular plugs (.039 gap) and the problem disappeared for about a week. It seems like the car is either starving for fuel or trying to flood out when I start off, but then recovers and runs great.
New plugs, air filt, fuel filt, rotor, cap, no codes or light. Right now i have premium gas and Lucas Fuel Treatment in the tank. I'm thinking next is plug wires, fuel pump, or a timing issue unless you guys can tell me otherwise.

cbuck - how did you determine it was the tps? Sounds similar to a problem with my 93 conv. 1.0 A/T. Last price I saw on them was just over $100. Too expense for just guess and swap venture.

Three mechanics told me it was the TPS. $129.99 USD was the best I found (Autozone) part # TPS486. I replaced it but now have a slightly different problem, so it is probably something else that caused similar symptoms. The TPS is a 5-minute repair when it IS the problem, but I'm still looking. I'll post back when I get it solved.

It turns out the EGR Valve was bad. It tested out OK, but when I took it off to check for blockage, I found that the internal valve seat was bad, letting the exhaust blow by. I replaced the valve and the car is fine now.

Re: Hesitation after idling in gear....HELP

I had the same exact problem.
'96 Geo Metro 1.3L, 4cyl., automatic.
Hesitation sometimes at idle but not always.
I replaced EGR valve and works fine now.
One of the ports, the one with the larger hose was so blocked I could not clean it.
Also, check the ignition timing.
