92 lumina apv location of tcc harness on trans.
Coming off the highway, my van trans. just locked up and stalled. It would restart, but putting it in gear would just make it chug and stall. I had to wait 15 to 20 minutes before it would restart. Anyway i would like to know where the tcc solenoid harness plug on the trans. is located, so i can unplug it and see if that was the problem and get it replaced. Hope someone can help.

Re: 92 lumina apv location of tcc harness on trans.
Open the hood... looking down into the engine compartment (to the right side behind the radiator), you will see the top of the tranny. A flashlight will come in handy. Look very carefully in this area (way down) and you should see a clip (usually light blue in color) there will be several wires stemming from the clip (mine had 2 wires).
Unclip the clip carefully not to break it as the actual portion that holds it in place is on the underside of the blue clip. Disconnect and drive it (van) around... Let us know the results. |

O.K found it and disconnected it. Drove it around some and so far no problems. I hope this is it. Tranny place told me if thats the problem it would be $228 labor and $45 for the part.

Its has been said that you can drive without it but will get slightly lower gas mileage on hwy trips.....
It's probably best to change it (but I'd look for someone that knows some basic mechanics to do it for you... save a bundle) . |

You dont need the TCC. You can get it changed if you want but its really not worth it. What it does is it locks the torque converter to the transmission. It does this when the car is warm, in the highest gear, and over a certain speed (usually about 45mph). This helps a little with gas mileage becuase there is no power loss through torque converter slippage. When the TCC is engaged the engien will run maybe 250 - 300 rpms lower. Not a big difference. Maybe with the way gas prices are these days it would pay for itself in the next year and a half, but the car may be dead in a year and a half. Its kind of a trade off. Some will argue that the torque converter slip makes extra heat which will damage the tranny. True it does make extra heat. However, it will not damge your tranny anymore than neglecting to change the fluid every two years will. If you change the fluid at the specified intervals (a little thing called preventative maintanence), the transmission will not be affected by the TCC not engaging.

Re: 92 lumina apv location of tcc harness on trans.
One of my reasons for wanting to disconnect rather than repair it right now is that i just got this van. It has 255,000 miles on it and all i was told was that it had a stalling problem. I took it to a repair shop that fixed an oil leak, map sensor and did a tune up. I put in a starter (what a pain that was!) and replaced the ignition module. Stupid me, if i had driven it first on the highway, i would have known the stalling was trasmission related and not engine. Now i just need to drive it around and see what other little problems it may have. It actually does have a engine related stall when you stop ( seems like the engine revs and misses slightly once in a while). Though it starts right up and goes and only does it once in awhile. Also the temp guage once during one of the stalls shot straight up but not into red. which was strange, not sure if itll do it again, but i guess i will find out. Anyway i don't know alot about cars, just few basics, so i'm not sure I'm going to be able to figure out what more it'll need to be running right, though i am going to give it a shot. But definitly want to make sure everything else is ok before i put a lot of money into it.

Same problem in a 94 APV. Started when I got off the freeway. Seemed to not downshift, and then stall out. Restart and all would be fine untill I came to a stop. Sometimes it did and sometimes it didn't. Then finally she locked up. My son came and pushed her down the street. I then fired her up and she started. Drove the rest of the way home and parked her.
Seems to act up when she warmed up. Other than that I have no other problems with the Moon Bus. I believe I followed the above instructions, blue conector, two wirers, and not to far down on the right of the trans. I'll have to wait for a test drive because we're in the middle of a snow storm. By the way both the Haynes and Chilton were no help. |
