'94 MGM Engine

OK. I have a 94 MGM, and everything except the engine is in great condition. My check engine light came on couple of weeks ago, and here is what the mechanic told me....
"This vehicle is intermintently loosing oil pressure, and the vehicle also has an oil consumption problem. Between these problems the lower end is starting to knock. We are suggesting replacement of the engine to fully correct this problem."
The two codes that I know they found are 172 and 176. They don't know how or why the engine is loosing oil and pressure, since everything seems to be working fine. I don't know if there is anything I can do to fix this problem, and if there is noting I can do, can somebody please tell me where I can get a new or used engine??? Thank you....

Re: '94 MGM Engine

Could be the oil pump is failing, depending on the mileage. How many miles on the MGM? Alot of cars will have low oil pressure at high miles. I don't know about the codes.

Is the engine burning oil? How much over how many miles?

New or rebuilt engines can be had at places like Advance Auto Parts, or of course junkyards for do it yourself. If you wanted someone else to do the work, find an engine shop or other reputable business that will do the work - and give you some sort of guarantee.

Re: Re: '94 MGM Engine

It has 105.000 miles on it, but they told me that the oil pump was fine.
The engine is burning oil, and what is really confusing is that the last time it spent oil in like a month and a half, and right now its been three months, and the oil is still fine.

First thing, find another mechanic quick.

I am away from home for holidays, and away from all my documentation, but thru internet serach, found that error codes 172 & 176 relate to HEGO (HO2S) sensor fault / always lean. This is a fuel system issue, not a lubrication problem.

Based on the above, and if you heard knocking, this may be consistent with simple spark plug knock.

Run, don't walk, to find alternate mechanical assistance. The shop is either trying to snow you or they are completely clueless.

Here is a link to PDF with code reader info...

Good luck

Yes, you might be right about my mechanic . But those two codes were the only ones I could remember at the time. I know there was also EGR valve error ? and there was also fuel pump (which i dont have any problems with), but I didn't think any of those were related to my problem, correct me if i'm wrong. I dont think there was anything reletad to oil.
P.S. I dont know much about cars, so please help out.
Thank you
