i was driving on the highway at about 70 mph in 5th gear. The shift up light flickered on once and then a few miles later the light flashed on again but then the engine just died. my oil was good the engine was not overheated, and gas was ok. my car would not start, and the started seemed to be going faster than normal. It has been a few days and the lights seem to be ok also so I am at a kind of standstill. a few people have suggested a new alternator. Does anyone else have any sugg?? please help I need my baby back

if it just suddenly died, it's most likely your timing belt. If it slowly discharged and died, it's either your alternator, or the wire from the alternator to the fusebox. Check the wire going from the alternator to the fusebox. Also, make sure the timing belt isn't broken. If those are good, let me know, and I'll give you some other things to look at.

Re: 93' metro died on hgwy
easiest way to see if belt is gone is to take the distributor cap off and have someone crank the engine while you see if the rotor turns while engine is cranking. if it turns belt is good, if it doesn't turn belt is bad

Re: 93' metro died on hgwy
It may sound stupid but check your coil wire. I had a similar problem one day and the stupid coil wire fell off the coil. From what you discribe though it sounds like a broken timing belt. The belt is under the black cover on the front of the engine.
