-Progress- 1955 300 SLR Mille Miglia (Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson)

While I'm building the CLK-GTR Supersport I'm also building this Mercedes Benz A Revell Classics kit picked up sometime around 1995 or so by my fatehr in law. (come to think of it I have another Benz thats taken a backseat ...a 1955 W196 F1 car, progress thread buried deep somewhere).

The Winning Mercedes 300SLR of Stirling Moss and navigator Denis Jenkinson negotiating a level crossing between Pescara and Rome on the way to victory in the 1955 Mille Miglia. Aided by Denis Jenkinson's pioneering navigation techniques, the pair won this great race in just 10 hours, 7 minutes, and 48 seconds, an average speed of 97.96 mph which was never to be beaten.

I'm having a hell of a time finding any photos of the engine bay for this car so the wiring I wanted to do may not happen even though the car is screaming for it and I would like to attempt some engine wiring for the first time. I guess the CLK will be the first car I wire up (lots of great refeence photos).

Body still needs to be primed and painted and very little progress so far. But for what it's worth.

Any help with reference and/or some suggestions is appreciated.

Cheers

Nice kit!
I still have to build its sibling, the 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé.
Here's one engine picture I have, though quite small:

Maybe it helps you.

All the best, Marc

thanks for the 2 photos those sure help. The Revell kit is ok...tons of flashing and some fitment issues but nothing that can't be worked out.

Well managed to get a bit of progress. This kit has huge fitment issues and terrible amount of flashing and mold lines so it's taking forever. Started to weather the engine and start some wiring, the chassis is close to complete. I primed the body and interior but need to wait for better weather to spray it.

Thanks for looking.

I'll try and get some close up once I have some wiring done

Nice to see you back with some progress. I picked up the 300 SLR coupe (thanks p9o1r1sche) so I will be watching your progress on this one as well.

Nice! I hope I can make this a great build. Just found out that the hood does not close correctly...this kit is VERY poor when trying to fit parts together. Dont ask about the space frame ..not one piece fit properly. I had to putty the front of the hood due to a 1mm gap at the front and now I find that it won't close over the engine (also had to remove the front hinge that Revell decided to mold into the hood). I think I'll detail the engine as much as my skill level allows me and leave it open. Otherwise the engine and chassis will need a lot of mods to allow the bonnet to close.

Well some progress since my last post. Finished the engine as best as possible. I could find only one - 2 photos of the engine so I could not detail it sufficiently. Put 4 wires in that start in the correct spot but I have no idea where they terminate and the fuel lines (which are completely wrong) due to a inaccurate engine/space frame by Revell. Thank god I managed to get the hood to close Anyways, after some paint here is the body need to clearcoat, shine all that jazz. Finish exterior details, dash, decals. Hopefully be done this weekend time permitting.

I'll be glad when this is complete..it's been a real pain in the arse.

Edit: Now I see some lines at the front of the car...need to sand and repaint.
