Thanks. This car was also recently spotted at another event (can't remember the name, i think Erik knows) and it was damaged. It appeared to have had some front damage and was all taped up with black tape at the front.

Yes - he drove it into the back of another car at ~30mph. Quite a bit of damage to the front end but nothing aft of the bottom of the windscreen.

Using a mobile phone whilst driving can be dangerous kids!

Lol. Thanks for the info. I would have thought he would have a hands free kit fitted. I bet he does now...

The raindrops add a very nice effect with the paint. Gorgeous pics!

So which event was it? And more importantly, did anybody get any pics?

It was at the Nurburgring Historic Grand Prix 2004 - here's the story from someone who attended the event:

Quote:
This summer a black F1 had a minor accident in Germany, when the driver dropped his mobile phone and grabbed down for it, while at the same time the car in front of him stepped on the brakes. There was contact, but the car was first repaired with white duct tape, which made it look quite funny. Later that day black tape did a better job (in the interest of privacy no further details are given), but yes I know the driver.
...and the image of the front end all taped up:

This is Tony Smith's car for those not familiar and he was apparently the driver at the time. Expensive mistake, I'm sure.

any idea when this was?

His car was featured in Discovery Channels Ultimate Cars earlier this month, and looked in perfect condition. The F1 was, of course, voted the ultimate car of all time.

I believe the event was in August of this year. Its really minor damage. I suspect it didn't take very long to fix. The problem with carbon fiber - although it's very strong - is that when impacted it can be very brittle and will crack easily depending on the angles of the forces acting on it. I'm sure his car got fixed as good as new.
