Chevy 350 or 305? ID#
Hey guys, one question for ya. I found a small block chevy motor with Vortec heads, and on the back of the motor where the bellhousing of the tranny is bolted on reads 400777. Now here is the deal, I got that Chevy Small Block Identification book outta Summit and no where is this number listed. The closest I came to was 460777 which is a 1978-1979 305 Chevy, this obviously isn't right because the vortec heads, TBI and computer are all with this motor, which we all no that these weren't around back in the day, and this shows absolutely no signs of tear down and rebuild. The guy that owns it isn't sure what year truck it came outta, but the guy he bought it from told him it was outta Blazer. OK big F***kin whoop, then he says OH it's a 350 4 bolt main, Hmmm How the hell does he know this? Dunno can't get a hold of this guy now, apparently he's moved. Now I could go through the BS and take the oil pan off and see if it's at least a 4 bolt main, no big deal there, but I'd like to know where this motor came from, what year it is and so forth. So anybody know what the hell I'm looking at here PLEASE tell me. GREATLY APPRECIATED!! Thanks guys

350 or 305?
Well I looked at the number again after I cleaned it off better with a wire wheel and sure enough it reads 460777 which is a 1976-1979 305. Now I'm just trying to figure out why somebody would go through the hassle of making this motor from a 1976-1979 to a 87-90 motor, because all the other ID numbers from the water pump, intake and, exhaust point to a 1987-1990 305 or 350. Puzzled and very stumped here. Guess the only other thing to do now is yank the oil pan and see whether we got a 2 or 4 bolt here. Any other suggestions guys?

take the heads off and take an inside mic and measure the bore. That will tell you whether it is a 350 or a 305.
