I was trying to change the front crankshaft seal on my 96 Metro 1.0 3 cyl w/ 110k miles. The first time I had to do this everything went fine, but I think I damaged the seal getting it on, so it leaked a lot of oil. I went to do it over and replace the seal, but this time the crankshaft timing gear didn't just slide off the way it did the first time. This time I just couldn't get it off.
Well this is what I ended up with when I finally got it off... Crankshaft woodruff key Crankshaft timing gear As you can see there is a gouge on the woodruff key on the crankshaft, and I broke off a piece a edge on the timing gear when I was prying it off. So here is my question...I'm sure that I'll need a new timing gear, I think thats a given. From the condition of the woodruff key I'm thinking I have one of two options... 1. Replace crankshaft which I don't think would be worth it given the time involved. Better to junk the car... 2. Put it back together, and prey that I don't have to tear it down again because the timing gear isnt coming ever coming off again. So what do you guys think? Is it as bad as it looks? |

Didn't get to see a pic of the crankshaft on here, but if you damaged the woodruff key, and it took a chunk out of the crank, it's trash. You could loc-tite the hell out of it and hope it's on-time, but you're gonna need a new timing gear anyways. That one will tear the timing belt to shreds the moment you start it. See if anyone on here has a junk motor they'll give you the crank shaft and timing gear out of. There's a buncha people who have junked their old engines lately. Just get the crank, measure the journal tolerances, and order some new crank and rod bearings accordingly. Shouldn't be too hard at all. on a metro with less than 150,000 miles, a std. size bearing should work on all the journals. BUT, don't use the old bearings. Disaster could happen. heh. That would be your best bet.

Well, the image finally decided to show up, and right after I already posted too! The woodruff key should be OK to use. As long as that much of it is still holding it's own. Just cover it in loc-tite before you put the timing gear back on, and prey you never have to take it off again(it'll reuqire a TON of heat, and that nice puller you built to take that bad boy off). But if you loc-tite it, it should hold time just fine with no vibration. But same as before, replace that timing gear!!! it's trash.

Re: Think I ruined my engine (w/ pics)
I knew the timing gear was trashed, and so is the woodruff key - to an extent. There is enough of it on there that it will still hold time fine, but it's in sorry enough shape that I hope to hell I never have to take the timing gear off again. What a freakin' mess! Thanks for the heads up on the junked motors...

Re: Think I ruined my engine (w/ pics)
i have a bunch of 1.0 core motors with gears and cranks if you do need parts. if the damaged part on the crank is outside the area where the seal rides it should be fine but if its right where lip is you should replace it. also be real carefull installing new sela that you don't rip or scratch it on damaged area
