Late 80's f150 300-6

My dad has a 88 or so F150 300 st 6 He just stuck a ton of $$$ into the tranny now it won't charge . Is there any way to tell if it is the voltage regulator or the alternator? The belt is tight.and I checked his connections.

check to make sure no wires are pinched between engine and tranny case,also check ground strap from firewall to top rear of engine a bad ground could cause strange problems
