Air Pump Vacuum Hose

Well, I just got my 85 past emissions inspection, since the mech gave me a break, but he said next year I have to have the vacuum lines hooked up (they are currently hanging here and there, cracked). But he didn't know where the vaccuum source was that I should hook up to.

Looks like I have a thin vacuum line coming up out of the area by the passenger side exhaust manifold, which is supposed to (possibly?) go up to a thermoswitch on top of the thermostat, which has a second vac line leading to the air pump.

I had the car idling warm, and put some vaccum on the vac line to the pump, and nothing happenned, so I'm not sure hooking up the vac lines would help anything. Maybe the car has to be going a certain speed, rpm, and have vacuum, for the pump to do something.

There was a slow leakdown on the vacuum to the pump btw.

Currently the pump just blows all the air into the air cleaner, whether the engine is warm or cold. I think I can feel a trace of air coming out of the other tubes (going to the exhaust manifolds, and cat) when I rev the engine, both cold and warm.

Anyone know where the vac lines go? Anyone know how I can test for proper functioning of the air pump?

Any and all advice greatly appreciated.

Re: Air Pump Vacuum Hose

Lemme see if I can scan you a picture of the underhood smog hose routing label.

The test for the air pump is to start the car, pull the hose from the pump to the air cleaner (it's the same size as a heater hose). When you rev the engine, you should feel air pulses out of the end of the hose.
