anyone what a whack at it???

Hi I just joined the forums.
I have an 86 dodge truck.
I am going to give you guys a shot to see if you can answer any of my questions. (thanks in advance)

225ci slant 6, 1 barrel factory holley carb, 3 speed auto
Ok first of all.......
The truck has some random stalling and sputtering mostly at idle or parking lots speeds.
The truck has horrible performance and takes upwards of 16 seconds to get to highway speeds(60).
It has been get crap gas milage for as long as my family has owned it.
I mean like 10mpg or so.
Oh and a very wierd vacuum leak.... at the plate of the carb there is a vacuum nipple going to the charcol canister (removed), when I try to plug it up it stumbles and missfires horribly and it gets even worse gas milage with no plug.
We have sence replaced the fuel filters, checked the fuel pump, have gotten 4(yes 4) rebuilt carbs, (because of stalling problems and then a small enging fire, didn't damage much of anything though) all of the ignition componets, and a few other things. I was going to check the cat. and the compression but haven't get to that yet.
Yes I know a well used and abused truck to say the least.
Anyone think they can help?

My vote is for the cat. I had the same problems on my 87 (no power, terrible gas milage), and as soon as I removed the cat it ran lgreat and MPG went up 2-3.

Well, not sure, but that cat sure has had a heck of a run if it's been on there since 86. And even if it isn't the root of your problems, it wouldn't hurt anything to take it out/replace it. Now I'd take it out, but if you'd like to keep the truck as stock as possible, or need the cat for inspections, replace it or knock out the insides and you'll see your mileage go up at least.

Thats what I was guessing.
I took off the muffler and it barely added any noise at all(maybe some at idle but part throttle sounds the same), so cutting off the cat is on my list to do this weekend
