some body work

some one that *claims* he knows body work (if you seen the truck the ** make a ton more sence) and how to repair holes and what not, told me that to install my tailgate handle relocater plate on the back of the tail gate that i want to oxy acedilien weld it shut (gas weld) but i thought it should be mig welded (220 not a 110 and mig because i 1 dont have acess to a Tig welder and 2 i dont know how to Tig weld) so whos right, should i get out the gas torch and puddle the metal together, even though the plate is 1/32" thicker then the sheetmetal of the tailegate, or should i take it off and mig it up??
and question number 2, i bought my truck used, and when i took off the dimond plate to spray my bedliner in i noticed overspray under it but the truck registerd as the factory color, well i now know its because the dip shit(s) backed somethign into the truck and BONDOWED a hole shut, not big, more of a crack then ne thing, its on the passenger side between the std cap and wheel well, should i take the plazma cutter and cut the section out and replace it (once again the mig/oxy question aplyes) or put a plate behind it and fill in the hole with weld and grind??? its kind of a difficult spot, ive got a so so amout of fab. but ive never welded on a vehical b4 and i would give the fab atleast a 5 on the scale to 10... what do you guys think i should do to fix this?? all mat is free or verry cheep so either way is fine, but whats recomended

Re: some body work

Your right, the guy's a dork
Mig welding is the way to do it.
go to this forum for any body work questions
http://hotrodders.com/kb/body-exterior/discussions.html
read everything about how to mig weld bodywork, they give a few good tips on how to not burn through, and how to not warp the metal

They've been really good to me, and seem to have a lot of pro's in it.

Good luck

Re: some body work

Oh I forgot to mention, there are some glues for mounting body panels mentioned somwhere in the same forum. I believe that PPG makes 1.
If I remember correctly some test firm cut a roof off a car, glued it back on then slid it down the road on it's roof. it held up to the test.

you really should read up on them before you start welding.

There are some advantages to glue, like it won't warp anything, or burn through, you won't have the burnt off paint (rust collector) underneath, ect

Of course welding is the time honered method, and there aren't any big problems with it.

Re: some body work

Torch welding is a outdated. The only thing you would do going that way is make a mess, warping I mean.Mig is the way to go,but you will stil get some warping.Weld only a quarter inch at a time at a given area, jump around.Just remember when you grind your welds down, stop when you hit the sheet metal.

Re: some body work

Glue is another option.I used it many times and is quick and easy,no warping.I didn't know PPG made some though?I always used FUSOR.

TIG welding is used where you need to control your heat while welding just as you would using oxy/acetylene. Aluminum and Stainless are usually done this way, however, MIG can also be used but the gas must be straight ARGON and not ARGON/CO2. And of course the wire.

TIG is used on steel where you need to control the penetration while welding, an example would be on a pressure vessel, and to minimize porocity. I have build Live Steam boilers and the best welds are done by using a TIG.

Re: some body work

I just looked on my favorites, and found the actual link to the section about glues that I mentioned
http://www.autobodypro.com/tektips/articles/panel.htm
sorry I should have looked earlier, and given it to you, and it's in a different web site alltogether.
