Question Replacing alternator in 97 Cherokee

Help! I am replacing the alternator in a 97 Cherokee. The alternator that came out is exactly 3" across the outside of the brackets on the top of the case. I have tried numerous parts stores and all of the replacement alternators are 3 1/8" wide and won't go into the bracket. We have even tried parts listed for 96 and 98 years. Has anyone had this problem? Anyone have a resolution?

Iam not sure why there is a diference in size? Is the bracket the bottom One in Question? Mine is 3 inches across at the bottom mounting bracket. If you cant find one to fit it shouldnt be that hard to grind a little on each side of the bracket. A 1/16th is too much to take off that is if that is the right altenator.

Re: Replacing alternator in 97 Cherokee

try loosening up the nuts that hold the front bracket onto the timing cover. If I'm understanding you correctly you are having trouble getting the top of the alternator to fit. There should be a bushing or sleeve that is pressed into the part of the alternator case where the long mounting bolt goes through. That's probably what is causing your problem. When you mount the alternator and tighten the bolt it should be pushed into the proper position.
