cadillac 500ci?

I really like the old caddilacs, they are really sweet, longer than a suburban, and sweet! Anyways, I am very interested in the 500ci engines, that just sounds awsome, what is that 8.0L? I don't know much about the cars that carry them, and how expensive a 500ci build is. What I want to know, is, I I put $2,000 towards engine parts, and I do all the machining and building, can I still make more horse power with a 500 block verses a 454? and what is the stock bore and stroke on these cars, and what kind of octane do they like? not that that matters when I build it, I was just woundering.

Re: cadillac 500ci?

Most 500's will run on 87 octane gasoline. They are 8.2 Liters and for $2000 you can get a good rebuild with more power. Just opt for higher compression pistons and a bigger cam. It might be cheaper than a 454 because the initial price of a 454 is higher. Plus you will ruin the cad with a Chevy motor IMHO. Chevies are boring building different engines is more interesing.

If you plan on making more than 500hp then the Chevy motor is better because of the extensive aftermarket.

Re: Re: cadillac 500ci?

I run the 500 on my airboat. They produce alot of torque at very low rpm alowing me to run direct drive. The 454 requires gear reduction because of their higher torque curve but are appreciable at higher rpm. The 500 is a hell of a motor and rebuildable blocks are readily available at most boneyards. Helping this motor breath is the key.
