How do you remove driveaxles?

I am changing the engine in my 95 (1.3 with auto trans). What is the proper way to remove the drive axles? I am down to this and the mounts and I can lift the assembly out. Thanks for any help.

It's actually really easy. I changed a CV axle in my metro in 20 minutes. With the car still on the ground, you'll need a 30mm, or 32mm axle nut socket, depending on which Geo ya have. Remove the hubcap, and you'll see the huge socket in the middle. Use a hammer and a flat head screwdriver, or chisel to bend the "hat" of the axle away from the groove. Be sure to bend it back after you put the axle back in. That's used to stop the nut from rattling loose. Well, that nut is on TIGHT. use a breaker bar, and probably a piece of exhaust pipe over the end for some more leverage. After that, jack the car up, remove the wheel, and remove the ball joint retaining bolt (Where the control arm meets the bottom of the hub). the ball joint will be a pain in the butt to get out of the hub after that bolt is out, but it will eventually come out. But once that ball joint is out, pull the suspension away from the axle, and it'll slide out of the hub. Then you can yank the axle out of the transmission. It's held in by a retainer clip, so just keep pulling till it pops out. Same process for the other side. I'd break both nuts loose before jacking the car up though.

best to use a pry bar or lare screwdriver to pop axle out of tranny. just pulling on it can pull the axle apart

sounds like your clips that hold axles in are shot. come out to easy and one will pop out going down road and pour all your tranny oil out
