Loud noise coming from center of my engine

Hey guys, I started my Z up this morning 1990 N/A auto and found a lound noise coming from the center of the top of the motor.. I cant hear the sound from inside the car and power seems to be ok.. As I rev it up it just gets louder and louder. It sounds bad.. Like a rod flying around.. Power is still good though.. Any ideas?? Thanks

Re: Loud noise coming from center of my engine

UPDATE: Sound seems to go away after warm up.. I have been getting changing oil pressure readings lately and thought it was just the guage.. Do you guys think the oil pump might be going and it is taking awhile to reach all the engine parts before warming up??

Was it a ticking noise?

Re: Loud noise coming from center of my engine

if it is a knocking noise and your oil pressure is going all over the place (especially low pressure), than you could probably have a spun bearing. when a bearing spins, the connecting rod will move on the crankshaft, causing a knocking noise. but then again, it could be something else, having a knocking noise can be a lot of different things. i would also check your oil, having too much or too little can cause a ticking noise.

could also be a gasket...i had a blown exhaust gasket once, it made a real bad ticking sound. but that wouldnt be in the center of the engine.

Re: Loud noise coming from center of my engine

You've got the '90 curse bro... Sorry to tell you.

Sounds like the valvetrain to me. Make sure you start taking extra care of the engine, oil changes as often as possible, TIMING BELT, belts, etc etc.

Just be careful with her...

Bummer man, I just got this gemstone.. I may need to buy a TT front clip and put that in.. The noise is very loud until I drive it a block or two, def not a ticking sound.

If its a mechanical knocking sound that goes away after the car runs for a while...I would think it would be an oil pressure problem somewhere. If it had spun a bearing it would be loud as hell and running rougher than ground turkey nuts.

May want to check the pressure readings on the outflow side of the oil pump.

Thanks Broke, I feel like it must be an oil pressure prob. as well. I will check it this week.
