f250 SD power loss on acceleration when cold

I was hoping that someone might be able to tell me what would cause power loss on acceleration on my F250 SD when the engine is cold. When I accelerate it just make a loud sucking sound and has no power. After the engine warms up things get better, but it takes a while for the engine to operate normally. Thanks for your help.

The PowerStroke engines use oil (under extremely high pressures) to fire the injectors. When oil is cold, it does not flow as well, and as a result power is slightly reduced (as much as 25%). There is an oil temp sensor, so the EEC can correct rail pressure to temperature, and to prevent engien damage at elevated oil temperatures.

In addition to the physical limitations of cold oil, the EEC reduces output in cold conditions to prevent excessive engine wear due to high loading on a cold engine.

So, some power reduction is normal. How much depends on the oil's weight, ambient temperature, and the year of the vehicle.
