Hi all, newbie with a few questions...
first of all let me start by saying ive been reading here for a while and this forums is full of knowledgable people and im happy to be apart of this community.
i just got a 1989 300zx turbo 5 speed, it was a direct trade for my 95 mustang coupe with no engine(project went horribly wrong) i plan on doing a full tune up, timing set this week and i plan on installing some some goodys in the near future, now im aware of what the manufacturers claims are (except for a boost controller) and i was wondering if anyone has some RWHP #'s for a combo similar to this... K&N FIPK, a borla catback, custom testpipe, and a manual boost controller (12 psi)? if anyone has any suggestions/personal experiance i would greatly appreciate it. thank you, oh, and the only problem with the car is that the dash works intermittantly, he claims its a relay "cause after it warms up, and dont work, you can just tap it and it will turn on" any suggestions on that? |

Re: Hi all, newbie with a few questions...
First off, welcome to AF! Secondly... glad that you came over from the dark side (you'll find most of the people around here aren't mustang fans.)
alright.. down to the good stuff... i wouldn't bother going with the k*n fipk... you'll just be paying $150 for something that would work just as well with a generic 9" cone filter. it's the same prettymuch with any brand name stuff for the z31.. a custom 3" mandrel bent exhaust system would probably cost the same as the borla.. perhaps a little less, it's good to do some research on it before you jump into anything. 12 psi is going to be pushing that thing pretty hard with no intercooler.. you might want to look into getting either an intercooler or some sort of water/alky injection system. if you don't want to bother with that stuff (for now) the best bet would be to set it at 8-10 psi and maybe jump to 12 if it's a cold night and you need a momentary boost of extra power. http://z31.com/tfaq/ is a good page for what you're looking for... z31.com has some good information on it for other stuff as well. also... read the stickies at the top of the page, they're filled with good info. hope you enjoy your time at af

Re: Hi all, newbie with a few questions...
welcome to AF. glad to hear you got a Z. like delerious said, i wouldn't go above 10 psi without an intercooler. if you do take delerious's advice on getting a custom cat-back, make sure the guy has a good rep and knows what he is doing. i have seen plenty of custom exhausts that have messed all up. post pics as soon as you can.

could i use a dsm/ 2 welded together, to make a diy intercooler? does anyone have pics of intercooler setups on a z31? ill take pics after it is detailed, (its been sitting for a while, the paint is still good, just a little dull), and i dont feel like washing, buffing, waxing cause its NOVEMBER, so ill have someone else do it
and the reason im going with the borla exaust, is not only cause i love the sound, but also because i found a full catback and a testpipe new for $300 |

i really wouldn't recommend it... the best thing to do would be to buy a kit, but if you really want to try and go cheap... find a fair size intercooler and try and figure out the routing for the pipes from a kit... like i said.. i wouldn't recommend it

You can get a generic size intercooler and fab some pipes up. Even if you have to go to a shop to get the pipes made it shouldn't be very expensive, these don't have to be teh-uber-mega-strength-of-death pipes or anything.

ive made a huge intercooler for my friends turbo trans am, by welding 4 dsm cores together making custom tanks and mandrel bending the piping, i have access to ANYTHING, MIG, TIG, plasma torch, mandrel bender, im a mechanic at a nice sized shop and i have a good friend who owns an exaust shop. i just need suggestions on the best mounting location, pics of how the pipes are plumbed would also help,
also any advice on the dash relay? sorry for not letting this thread die

could be the dash relay??? there are some way to tests those things but i forgot. i will try and find the article i read about them. anyways...for an intercooler in an 89. i have seen alot of people move a aftermarket radiator to where most car's radiators are (in the engine bay at the very front). then put the intercooler in the same position as the radiator was. i would think that is the best. or you could build a custom air duct in your nose panel and remove your air filter from right there and put a small intercooler angled in there.
