Is there a way to tell if a block is bad?

I was just wondering if like maybe the block has cracked somewhere on the inside? Anyway to tell if the block is cracked/warped?

magnaflux it or go over it with a torch with a carbon flame, the carbon deposits will settle into cracks.

So I would take everything out of the block then take it to get magnafluxed?

yeah strip it, you can buy magnaflux kits I think where you can do it yourself, I'm not real sure whats involved in doing it. I think you just degrease it real good then you spray a chemical on it and it shows up in cracks, but dont quote me on that.

Well there was water mixing with my oil, and when you take the dipstick out and the motor is running, it'll spit oil out at you. What should I do? I have stuff to rebuild the bottom end, but how do I know the block isn't bad on the inside?

heh sounds comical, like one of those movies where there working on a car and turn something with a wrench and oil shoots them in the face.

Run a compression test yet?

Too bad this isn't comical at all. I haven't done a compression check yet. I already took the head off. Anyway I can still do it without the head on?

Re: Is there a way to tell if a block is bad?

Yes, I pulled the head off yesterday and most of the oil sitting in the grooves was very milky.

I just don't want to rebuild the bottom end then have the block fucked up or something ya know?

First of all magna flux is only for cast iron blocks/heads. What you will need are these 2 penetrating dyes. Ask you local mechanic about it. If your crankase is pressurized (oil spitting out of dipstick), possibly blown gaskets, etc. you may want to look into getting a new pcv valve. your old one might get clogged up which will prevent your motor from being able to relieve pressure that gets built up in the block.
