Re: Ferrari 250 GTO restoration project

Great restoration project. Its an Italeri kit, maybe Revell re-pack of Italeri, but its definitely Italeri. Also, exhaust manifolds were either white, or burnt metal gray. Rear (and front) suspension was painted black, cam covers plain black. Keep up great work!

Re: Ferrari 250 GTO restoration project

Seems I got all the chassi colours wrong
Well I've been working without reference photos and just painted what feelt right..

Some new pics. Front suspension and brakes are now assembled, and the interior is in brown leather with wooden steering wheel.
Also included some primer pics of the body to check the ride height. Only problem is that the V12 is sticking out of the hood opening so the hood doesent close properly...
Have to mount the engine lower in the chassi..
The pics:

does anyone have an estimate of how much a REAL 250 GTO would go for now?

They are worth about 2,5-5 million GBP.
Only 37 ever built so I guess it's not the buyers market really...

Re: Ferrari 250 GTO restoration project

Ok so only 5 months later, here I am with an update on the old 250 restoration project...

Have just realized that a restoration project will always be a lot more difficult than building out of a box with brand new parts, so the end result will never be top quality, but It's a lot of fun and it costs nothing to fix old mistakes..

Since the last update the body has been painted, the chassis more or less completely assembled. Here are some pics of the chassi and the (at the time) freshly painted body:

More on the finished body with crome parts etc will follow in my next update.

Just for fun I tested to mock-up a 250GTO-Enzo hotrod:
Pretty cool huh ? (and yes, it was still in red primer at this stage)

Re: Ferrari 250 GTO restoration project

Gonna look sweet when it's done (I know you were just playing around, but I prefer the original wheels.... this car is just too perfect to mess with ). I built the Gunze low-tech kit almost 2 yrs ago and it's still my favorite model in my small collection. Would love to get my hands on a high-tech kit someday...

Nice build you got there, will it come to IPMS-Open in April next year? We could sure use some more civilian cars among all the military stuff!
According to my Ferrari 250 GT competition cars there was 40 GTO's built. Between 1962-1964 there was 39 original GTO's built and three of them had the 4 litre 400SA engine tested by Scuderia Ferrari in GTO chassis and bodywork. These were sold to privateers afterwards. There was also a fake built in France with no original parts in 1979 based on a 250GT 2+2 and that rounds it all up to 40 cars, but as far as I'm concerned the last one doesn't count. If you need details just let me know and I'll try to get you some photos from the book, don't have a scanner but it works with the cam to.

Re: Ferrari 250 GTO restoration project

Hello
No I will not enter it to IPMS Open since I'm not very happy with the finish. May look ok in the pictures, but nowhere near what I would like to bring to a show.
Maybe some other projects will appear in April though.
