Need help stop&go problems

I recently purchased a 1999 prerunner 2.7L and it is starting to have a hesitation like feeling when i stop and when i go. It will sort of do a quick dip down when i come to a stop, and then it will do the same when i go from a stop. Anyone have any ideas as to what this could possibly be?

Is this an engine effect or a suspension effect?

Im thinking its a suspension problem or a drive train problem, i know its not engine though.

Question: 2002 Toyota Tacoma Pre-Runner V6 mileage: 9000: Since day one, my automatic transmission "thumps" when down-shifting just before coming to a stop. If it does not thump when coming to a stop, it will do it when taking off from a stop. Tends to start doing this when normal engine temp is reached. Dealer says that it is no problem and that some trucks do this. Dealer says that they tried adding lubrication to the prop shaft joints to help lessen the thump. Dealer says that the Toyota Sequoia does the same thing. Is there a solution or is this just a quirk of these models?

Answer: Without riding in your car to hear the “thump” we can only guess it is coming from a slip joint on the drive shaft. As you are stopping, it tends to pull the joint apart and as you start accelerating it pushes it back together. If it is sticky or lacks lubricant, it has a tendency to jump causing your thumping sound.

If you have a 2WD truck, the only slip joint in the propellor shaft is splined into the tail of the transmission and is always lubricated by the transmission lube. It is hard to understand how this can be inadequately lubed. This type of problem is usually associated with 4WD trucks that have greasable splines in the propellor shafts. They don't get lubed by the tranmission since they are bolted to the output shafts of the transfer case.

i have the same problem with my taco. It usually thumbs when i come to a complete stop and when i release the brakes. But it kind of jerks to when it does that. feels like someone tapped one in the back. And also when I dont let the temp hit the mid point, it doesnt shift over very well, its fine when its nice and warmed up. So if anybody know about this please help. I dont want to go and spend money on a new tranny if i dont need to.

kushum - Grease your propellor shafts, particularly your splines (if 4WD).

As far as you shifting when cold goes, this is normal to delay shifting if the engine isn't warmed up.

I went to a mechanic and told him to grease up the propellar shaft and he told me it couldnt be done. He said that toyota made a case that you cant get to to grease it. Is this true or is he just talking out of his ass. And also he said I couldnt adjust my valves. Is this true

1998 taco extra cab 2.7 automatic same thig but real bad
i have been to the dealer many times and nothing..
from what i figured out its the automatic trans that is adding to the problem. look at your rear leaf springs withe the truck on flat ground.
have someone push and pull at the bumper and wach for the spring to warp like a s shape...
i tried to have the dealer fix it under warrenty but i was told its not broke we cant replace it....


please chack out this like to see if we can get toyota to do a recall on thies...

my original spring is 3 leaf and 1 load leaf..(no longer available from toyota) now replaced to a 4 + load leaf spring for added streingth

I have a 2003 Tacoma mini 4cyl 2wd 42000 miles that has very similar symptoms to what you are describing. I have posted about the symptoms a couple of different times looking for someone that may be experiencing the same thing I am. I recently took it to the dealership after realizing the drive train warranty covers 60 months or 60,000 miles. I was told by the dealership that the rear differential was bad and needs to be replaced. This "CLUNK" or "THUMPING"...whatever you want to call it has been acting up for about a month. The noise only seemed to show up after the truck was warmed up. Other than the noise, there are no other signs of any kind that anything is wrong.
