Cam Ignorance

I have just purchased a 99 GT and I have read that possibly one of the best first mods is to buy new cams. I know what cams do and the basic concepts but I know nothing about the specifics that make them a good choice. Could some one please give me some insight about what I should be looking for?

Re: Cam Ignorance

cams as a first mod is not a good idea. start with a shifter (if it's a 5spd), 4.10 gears, air filter/cold air, and exhaust mods.

there are guys running killer ETs with stock cams in 2v engines such as yours.

Yeah, I agree. The stock cams arent bad at all, and until you do some internal motor work, aftermarket cams wouldn't really do much for ya. Either way, good luck!

Re: Cam Ignorance

also, cams in a mod motor is a huge amount of work, especially for an amature. you realize that the motor essentially has to be stripped down to the long block in order to do this properly. that means all the accessories, intake manifold, valve covers, etc, and then there's all the little stuff that can go wrong.

Partially correct. Mods are overhead cam motors thus you don't need to take off the intake when doing a cam swap. You will need to completely strip down the accessories to access the big 1 piece timing cover. Like StangNut said they are a huge amount of work and if you screw up the timing say bye to your engine. If your are going to get a decent cam you'll need some better valve springs to boot which is also a pain. Comp Cams XE262AH is a good street cam for daily drivers good for 25-30 RWHP. If you got the time and courage go for it otherwise pay a proffessional. Modulardepot.com has complete instructions on the cam swap if you are so brave. Good luck. I haven't got the balls to do it myself yet but plan on it before the end of the year.
