Front Brakes

Hey All,
Just wanting to know what kind of performance anyone is getting for the front brake pads? My 2003 Yukon is due, and I am close to 40k (the G/F drives it all the time)

40k for front brake pads sounds quite reasonable to me, particularly on a heavy vehicle...even more so one that sees a fair amount of stop & go.

I upgraded my brakes at around 16k on the clock - just a guess, but I would've expected to see 40-50k miles out of the pads.

Hey Mik,

I have a 02 xl. Went to replace the pads in April at 44K miles and they looked perfect. Was hunting last weekend (Nov 21) and on the way home heard the old grinding of metal to rotor. Thought no way was it the front. Checked the front and they still look new at 53K miles. Checked the rear disc pads and they were absolute toast.

The rears were so easy to replace except that you need a socket (12mm I believe) instead of an allen wrench.

There are three brake pad sizes for the rear that I know of so make sure you get the correct ones or you will be going back (like I did) to get the right ones. If you can...take an old pad with you. $48.00 for lifetime pads and 1 1/2 hour of time. Next time it will take about 45 minutes.

For those wondering, I think I caught it early enough that the rotor was not damaged enough to need turned but I will keep an eye on it.

This is the first time I ever changed pads myself and it was well worth the effort, time, education, and future savings!

Front brakes on new body style gm fullsizes last virtually forever- I have seen 150K stillp lenty of pad left. Rear brakes 30-50k.

You must do a lot of highway driving...'cuz if you do mostly stop-and-go city driving, there is no way those pads will last 150K...not unless you drive like a granny! j/k...

Hi all,

Checking in with an update to the rear brake job on our 2002xl mentioned in my last post above. Brakes are working great...rear rotor appears to have been okay.

Driving 65 mph down Highway 30 last Sat evening (Dec 11) when an idiot decided to turn left...right in front of me. Stood on the brake pedal and the front tires chirped...anti-locks kicked in. I would love to have measured how quick it got me stopped...(thanks GM)...with about 15 foot to spare from hitting the fool who never saw my headlights.

It stopped us so fast that my neck and shoulder hurt until Monday from the sudden G-force being restrained by the seatbelt.

Having had a 97XL that went through brakes every 25k, I am near ecstatic with these brakes and I know after driving the 97XL for 100k miles and the 2002XL for 54,500 miles, the 97 would have plowed right through that idiots' passenger door.

As for getting 100k or more from front brakes...I drive my trucks very hard and on this one I do expect to get 100k on the front pads.
