Angry 98 Explorer Transmission hard shifting

I have a 1998 Explorer with automatic transmission and 85K miles on it. Lately it has been shifting very hard for the first few shifts after it has sat over nite or all day while I'm at work. There's a stop sign about 1000 yards from home that afterwards it seems to shift ok. Similar arrangement at work. It down shifts pretty hard approaching the stop as well. I live in MA and it has started to be cold in the morning but this was beginning to happen about a month ago and it wasn't that cold ~45-50 degrees in teh morning. Any thouhgts?

Re: 98 Explorer Transmission hard shifting

sounds like you just need to let your truck warm up first.

fluid flow through tiny holes in ur tranny called orfices. when the fluid is cold it gets thick so its good to let your car warm up before u leave anywhere during cold start.

if it persist, post and I'll try to help you out......I'm taking automatic transmissions class.

Thanks. Do you think a power flush of the transmission would help?

Re: 98 Explorer Transmission hard shifting

it doesn't hurt. check the condition of the fluid.

if the fluid looks like crap, flush.

it should be red.....kinda like cranberry juice.

I don't know how much a flush cost...just try warming it up and if that doesnt work and the tranny is still acting up, post. I'm interested in helping find the problem.

Re: 98 Explorer Transmission hard shifting

Don't overlook engine performance. The further your into the excellerator pedal the harder it will shift.

As a tranny guy. Stay away from the power flush. Go to a transmission shop, have them do a pan drop service(not easy on this one) then flush converter and cooler if you want. That way people can see if exceesive wear is occuring by looking at the pan, or cutting open the filter. Or you could probably spend the same amount of money to have a decent shop diagnose your complaint.

Just a couple thoughts for ya...

Good luck

Looks like patience is the answer! I've found that letting it warm up even for just a minute or two (which can seem like an eternity when you want to get somewhere) is enough to make the problem go away. Strange that is has just recently been doing this but I can live with the waiting.

thanks for your help!
