Misfire in Cyl #3 - solutions?
My service engine light came on yesterday morning.
During the day, I stopped at AutoZone and had them scan the car. They reported that the code indicated a misfire in cylinder #3. The clerk stated that the usual cause is a bad plug, bad plug wire, or a bad ignition module. If it were a bad tank of gas - there would have been misfires on multiple cylinders. After about 6 hours of driving - the light went out. So as of now, I'm going to treat it as a temporary problem. If and when it returns - how would I check an ignition module - or is that better left to my local mechanic? Besides the 3 problems areas the mechanic suggested - is there anything else I should be aware of for potential problems relating to a misfire (ie: clogged injector)? Thanks! |

Re: Misfire in Cyl #3 - solutions?
Yeah, it's usually the very simple answer here. Ingnition is #1 suspect, with plug wire as 1st check. Then look at plug, then coil. (Don't clean your plugs, they have an oxide coating over the platinum that is damaged by normal plug cleaning sand blasters.) Aurora has the coil overs and each coil unit runs two cylinders so I don't suspect coil with only one cylinder misfiring.
#2 suspect is injecters. Easy enough to get them cleaned at any oil change place, costs about $60. Worst case is replacement, but this is rare. This problem will not just go away. I highly suspect bad wire because of the intermitant nature of the problem. And OEM wires are carbon core which wears out and breaks easily. Try Magnacore wires, very high quality and same price as OEM.
