Smile Coolant attacks engine bearings, repair head gaskets ASAP.

If your engine is using water its a sign of leakage, it is not "Normal".
Find the leak and fix it. A pressure pump on the radiator caps position will aid in finding the leakage. Sometimes it seeps onto a hot suface and evaporates before it drip to the ground. Hose clamps, radiator seams, micro cracks in the radiator tank and hose necks are all likely suspects.
If the heater core leaks it could seep under the carpets and slowly evaporate. Coolant has a sweet smell and once learned is not easily forgotten. The interior of the windows will get a sticky smeary coating and it tastes sweet like coolant.
By the way please remember coolant is poisonous and 2 tablespoons are enought to kill a dog.Kids might think it taste good too.
Dogs and cats are attracted to coolant and will consume it, please clean up spills and dispose of properly. It is also explosive/flamable under extreme conditions not normaly seen in real world circumstances.
Use only BMW approved coolant. The "Other" corrodes and gels.
BMW and VW/Audi/Porsche all require approved coolant, Get IT!
Because of their unique designs BMW's are notorious for needing head gaskets.Platic thermostats, plastic radiators, plain old age.
When a gasket "Blows" and Water is in the oil or combustion chamber its likely to migrate to the engines bearing and there is the beggining of the end of the engine. Due to its corrosive nature or some chemical action. Coolant will destroy a motor faster than a high school student. If you see water in the oil or "The big Milkshake" Stop the engine, tow in and repair problem[s] then flush engine oil several times.
