some (probably simple) questions on my 2g CRX

I'm fairly new to this forum and to the tuner car scene, so please bear with me.

I was checking some serial numbers today on my '89 CRX Si and came across a couple of things I had questions on...

I read the sticky post that had the VIN numbers explained, and I was wondering if its more common to have a CRX that's built in Japan or in North America. My CRX has some stuff under that hood that has Japanese writing on it as well as English (Rad cap, fuse box).

Another question I had was on my motor. After reading some sites on the 'history of the CRX' I was led to believe that the stock motor for the '89 Si had 105hp, but after checking the model number from my engine (D16A6) with the chart on this site, it says 108hp. Is this a case of engine swap? or do I somehow have a hybrid of the cars from 1988-1990? ('88's pillar mounted belts, '89's VIN, and '90's Si engine)?

I'd like to find out the history of my stock (as far as I know) Si. Any answers or comments are welcome!

Re: some (probably simple) questions on my 2g CRX

for starters you have a 4th generation CRX,
you wouldn't want a 2g!
I would say the most commons built in america/canada,
but 1st started in japan, every once in a while, you'll hear someone say they have a JDM civic/crx that was made in japan!
& to me,they are alot more faster then the 4g replicas,
& yes,I would believe that your crx SI has 105 hp
& you checked on another site that said 108hp,
but its only a 3 hp difference, its practicly correct!
but you could have a swap done in there somewhere......
maybe someone here in the AF has the exact same CRX as yours & could help you out with what came stock!

You should have a sticker or plate(Cant remember which) under the hood that will say made in canada or japan. I have noticed most crx's are japan. alot of hatches are canada

But because it was built in japan for the us does not mean its a jdm(Read over priced trivial parts) car

Re: some (probably simple) questions on my 2g CRX

1990civicdxhb most every thing you posted is false.

That is the correct motor, it is 108hp, Seatbelts were not mounted on the door till 1990, Your VIN will tell you where it was made. As well as it will have a Product of Japan sticker on the radiator support if it was made in Japan. Like 2CrX said, just because it was made in japan is not "JDM".

For the most part you have a stock crx Si that has nothing special about it. Sorry, you dont have some ultra rare needle in a hay stack.

Re: some (probably simple) questions on my 2g CRX

its definatly a 2g rex, since they were only made for 3 generations if you count the del sol(aka crx in other countries)

as far as the motor, 108 i believe was the si number for all 88-91's. and 99.9% sure it was made in japan, no early model honda was made in the states till i believe the 94 accord in ohio.

Here's a copy/paste from this board:

A Quick Engine List

Since everyone always asks, "which engine can i put in my 4g?" heres a small list.. feel free to add to it.

direct bolt in engines: (least performance to most performance)
D15B1 -70hp
D15B6 -70hp
D15Z1 - SOHC VTEC-E
D15B2 - DPI, 92HP
D15B7 - 92-95 DX/LX, MPFI 105hp
D16Y7 - 96-00 DX, "DPMPFI" 105hp (?)

direct bolt in performance engines:
D16A6 or SOHC ZC - 108hp, great upgrade from DX/LX engine. cheap.
JDM D15B - welcome to VTEC. nice peppy engine, 125-130hp
D16Z6 - quick, with bolt ons should be able to beat alot of other sport compacts, 125hp
D16y8 - same as D16Z6 but 127hp
DOHC ZC - quick, similar performance to SOHC VTEC but DOHC NON VTEC, aftermarket support not quite as great as SOHC VTEC, 130hp
I've put my engine model in bold, and also what it comes at for hp. I found it on this site, not some other site, and I was just verifying it.

I know for a fact that its a 2g CRX. I think you're thinking Civic when you say 4g.

Thanks, 2CrX, for kind of explaining the whole 'built in Japan' thing.

Re: some (probably simple) questions on my 2g CRX

I think the d16a6 from 88-89 had 105hp and from 90-91 had 108hp due to slightly more aggressive cam.

How are you supposed to be able to tell if it's ZC or just a plain D16A6

Re: some (probably simple) questions on my 2g CRX

Pretty sure it was 90, becasue the doors interchange between 88 and 89 without converting to a differnt type seat belt.
