synthetic in trans or not?

ok, I have jut aquired a 92 GSR and it has 173k on it and I am going to do some maintanence on it tomorrow.

*adjust valve lash
*flush cooling system
*cap/rotor/plugs/wires
*5w30 synthetic/filter
*fuel filter
*pcv valve
*check belts/hoses
*thermostat/gasket (165k on my truck and the SOB stuck while driving and next thing I was doing was ripping the head off for a new head gasket)
*new rtv for the valve cover gasket(small leak)
*change tranny fluid - I am going to use 10w40 I think cuz chiltons says continuous high speed driving thats better and Im about to go 3k miles of freeway in a 2-3 day period. but would it be better to go full synthetic or no?
*inspect timing belt -water pump has supposedly been replaced recently so the belt shouldve been done at the same time, hopefully belt looks real nice otherwise ill have to pay a dealer to do it since I dont have the right tools with me. I will do this for sure when I get home though unless belt looks *NEW*

anything else you can think of that should be inspected/replaced?

Re: synthetic in trans or not?

I've ran full syn in my 91rs and it's made a world of difference it doesn't grind as bad when going into 3rd also the shifts are more fluid and smooth.

Re: synthetic in trans or not?

alright I will probably go that route. how many miles you got, heard it can clean deposits that are helping seals "seal" when they have lots of miles on them when switched.

Re: synthetic in trans or not?

thats one thing I did on the test drive, rip it right to redline in first and throw er into end and same from 2-3. both shifts were as smooth as buttah!

no grind, no notchiness, about the smoothest manual ive owned. maybe he put some addative in, or maybe its rebuilt. cuz Ive never owned a honda with more than 130k and ive bought em all with a bit of synchro noise in either 1-2 or 2-3. first teg even 3-4 had a little problem which I dont hear of too often.

Synthetic fluid and Honda Trannies don't mix to well. I would be very carefull about using it expecially if you are about to drive 3k miles. I know you guys might think i'm full of it. I have worked at a Honda dealership for 2 yrs and worked on hoda's for a long time. If you don't believe me call the dealership.

Re: synthetic in trans or not?

ok, well I might get that stuff then.

went to autozone and their computers dont know my car exists and the 93 gsr they show no part numbers for the B17, im almost positive everything I need is the same from either but Im gonna drive their in the next couple of days and do my tuneup in their parking lot so I can check it all out when I buy it to make sure its right.

but if im wrong and any of these things arent commong from the B18A and the B17A let me know

cap/rotor (I just remember hearing you have to have a dist from a VTEC engine for a VTEC swap so maybe the whole shape of the setup differs?

PCV valve
thermostat

I know plugs/oil filter are the same, oil of course isnt vehicle specific, fuel filter is part of the actual car,

plug wires are the same reach correct?

man, I would check again because every advance auto/autozone/pepboys/napa that I have been to has most common parts lfor the B17. I just bought cap/rotor/wires/fuel filter/ etc from advance auto abut a month ago to tune up my car. granted they may not stock these items but they will get it for you within 2 days usually from one of their warehouses.

Re: synthetic in trans or not?

they had em, but I just had to buy it all for the B18A1, cuz the 92 they dont even have a GSR listed and when you go to 93 they have it listed but when you select the GSR under all the parts lists where the number should be it doesnt list any part numbers.
