Question 86 LeSabre Dash removal (new front spks)

How do I get to the front speakers in my car? I'm assuming the obvious dash removal, but how would I do that. I removed the 5 underside screws, and it didn't want to go anywhere. I did some quick research on this site and found that there are 5 more I need to remove, but where are they? What's the best way to get to those 5 hiddens? I'm a car novice (I do computers, not cars) and new to the forums, so please be gentle.

If you have a plastic defroster vent cover that goes all the way across the top of the dashboard, you can pop that off with a screwdriver and the 5 screws are located inside the vent openings. I know that is how my 1988 LeSabre is designed.

I don't quite understand which part you mean by the platic cover. I've linked a (poorly compiled) image of my dash ... it's actually a series of pictures that I used Paint to combine, but you'll get the general idea, I hope. Which part do I pry off? If someone could save the image and make a mark on it, then reupload it somewhere else, that'd be best, but if you don't have that capability, then a verbal description could work too.

Re: 86 LeSabre Dash removal (new front spks)

The 88 dash is not the same as the 86 dash to get at the speakers. If you really want new speakers, put them in the front bottom corners of the front doors. There are holes already there for the bracket you need. I was able to fit a pair of 6x9 three ways in mine. If you do that, however, the window won't go down the last 2.5 inches of its path... The cardboard backing on the carpet on the paneling needs to have a hole cut in it, but don't cut the carpet. That is way, way easier than pulling apart the entire dashboard just to get at 2 wimpy speakers.

Re: 86 LeSabre Dash removal (new front spks)

Thanks for the response to both of my threads, buickmastermind. I haven't yet purchased the replacement speakers, so I'll definitely look into that. If I can fit some 6x9 speakers into the door instead of 4x6 in the front, then that'll definitely be a larger increase.

Taking the dash out >>> Lots os screws, lots of pieces... lots of fun. (Provided you don't need to drive it for a couple days.)

It wasn't too difficult to take the required parts of the dash apart to get to the speakers. I managed to do it shortly after posting this message. There were the 4 screws on the underside, and about another 8 or so underneath the fan grill, and once I removed all of those, the dash came off as a whole quite easily, allowing me access to the speakers. Unfortunately, the speakers I had that I was going to replace them with were 3.5" from my old 83 Ford LTD and I was going to put them in the Buick, but I didn't do my research beforehand to find out that the Buick takes 4x6" :P Ah well, you live and learn, I guess. I'll take apart the door area this weekend to see if I can fit some 6x9" in there. BTW, buickmastermind, I love you car and I want it -- how much did it set you back to supercharge it?
