5 speed versus 6 speed....

A friend is going to get a new GTS. I know that it's offered in 5 or 6 speed, so I was wondering which is faster in the 1/4 mile?

I don't know actual specs but If they are the same engine w/the same power, the 5 speed would have a beter time because the 1/4 is about acceleration and the gear ratios on the 5 speed would be shorter than those of the 6 speed, thus creating a faster acceleration rate. Just my guess.

GT-S has more power to begin with as well as a 6-speed, i know people with GT-S's that run high 14's with their GT-S with little mods

sorry brian.. a 6 speed has smaller ratios so the 6 speed would be faster if you think about it the way you did

i got a 6 speed in my 2000 gts and i love it, you got to have the 6. and what proves it is that like 2 days after i got it another celica gts wanted to race me and the only difference for my car and his is that he had the 5 speed. at the end of the race he told me he wish he would of gotten the 6 speed. so if that tells you anything you will have your answer. ITS ALWAYS BETTER TO HAVE AN EXTRA GEAR TO PLAY WITH!

No. The reason you beat a GT is because a GT is only a 140HP w/ 125ft-lbs of torque. It has VVTL as a GT-S has VVTL-i (variable valve timing and lift w/ intelligence) and 180HP with 130ft-lbs of torque. Bigger engine, shorter gears, has to be faster :-)

Re: 5 speed versus 6 speed....

5 spd has their own advantage, you shift less..
every shift takes .2 to .4 secoonds
imagine that on the race .2 or .4 is ALOT!!!
If you can skillfully shift good /w 6spd is not a problem, 6spd counters back with it's closer gear ratio. if yo car is really supe up, 6spd is a need for top speed and close ratio .....um...yeah go figures
race and theres only 1 way we can find out...
race it

Oh, i would probably get 5sp when racing cuz i'm simply lazy to shift
(or better yet, race an /w automatic...somepeople do that...that would
total be ugly- no skill involve at all, j/k auto sucks bad at starting point)

6sp when i'm trying to save gas on the freeway
yo clutch will suffer alot more than 5sp since it requires more shifting
then again SAVE gas,
