car move alittle after being placed into park
I have a 2000 grand prix SE. The problem is that when i place the car into park it seems move a couple of inches (forward or back depending on slope). I'm not sure if this is an adjustment to the shift linkage. If so how do you adjust it..Thanks

Re: car move alittle after being placed into park
They will move a little on a slope. How steep and when you start back up and put into gear anything different happen i.e. sounds, shifter feeling, klunk,) as apposed to level ground?

Re: car move alittle after being placed into park
It does it on level ground sometimes it moves forward and sometimes backwards. I assumned this was being caused by a very slight slope. The car makes no unusual sounds when this happens.

Using your parking brake is a good habit to get into. Engaging the parking brake after putting the shifter into P, but before taking your foot off the brake pedal, will greatly releive the stress placed upon your transmission.

Just a heads up, i noticed my wifes car doing that really bad, didn't think much of it, and about 2 weeks later the tranny went out. It's a 2000 Gt with 82,000 miles. Can't belive it. We bought it cause we knew it was reliable, now, all over the internet, the 2000's trannys are dropping like flies. Dang!

Re: car move alittle after being placed into park
I have a 2000 GTP with almost 100,000 on it and the trans shifts great. I just had it flushed and installed a new filter. The fluid was a very, very, light tan. I've put 400 miles on the change with no adverse reactions.

Re: car move alittle after being placed into park
many GM vehicles have the same parking lurch. It is most common in the 4t65e transaxle, and is normal. There is too much clearance in the parking pawl mechanism between the tang and the engagement cog, which causes the movement.

Re: car move alittle after being placed into park
Every car Ive ever driven with an automatic moves a little after you put it in park and take your foot off the brake.
I think its just a pin or a fixed gear in the trans that holds it. Putting pressure on it will just make a little more difficult to shift from park, i dont think it will harm the trans. Biggest risk is parking too close to somebody and rolling into them ![]() Look in your owners manual under "torque lock". And use your ----> "parking" <------ brake!

The bonus part of all this is that parking brake cables can rust in place if they're not used. Use it and that will most likely not happen. I like the way our foot brake works. Push...ON......push.......OFF. Works great for holding the car in place at the drag strip too! |

Re: car move alittle after being placed into park
Only complaint about the parking brake is that half the time i hit it with my foot getting out and defeat the purpose of putting it on in the first place.
But im getting better

Re: car move alittle after being placed into park
I just got my 2000GTP pace car and now I'm gonna use the parking brake all the time. It is the easiest parking brake to use I ever had in a car.
