re : e39 lowering springs

hELLO
i have a E39 that i've lowered by 40mm all the way. the front has still got a 55mm gap between the arch and wheel (18") It does not look lowered. the rear is sweet.
I dont know what the problem is. some people say the installation of the struts could be incorrect. However the handling is perfect. Its been 3 weeks since I had the drop. If the struts were incorrectly placed would the handling be affected?
Pls advice. ( can the springs be faulty)?
