I have a 1991 Suburban 5.7 149,000 mi 4x4. The truck starts and idles fine in park but stalls as soon as i put it in gear. I need to keep on the gas to keep it running. I have replaced the egr, tps, iac. Can it be a torque converter problem or temp sending unit affecting egr sys.? The temp gauge reads cool all the tim, like 120 degrees. please help

Sounds like the timing is off. I had exactly the same symptoms when I replaced the intake manifold gasket on my 1991 Olds Custom Cruiser. 305 TBI, basically the same engine as yours. When I put the distributor back in I got it off by one tooth. Fixed that and it ran fine again.
Good Luck! c. |

Re: 1991 5.7tbi stalls
Trans problem NO
Any tune up done??? Sounds like you have a few problems 120 deg is way to low of a operational temp the thermostat might be stuck open. But that is not the stall problem. |

Last year I did the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel pump, alternator, and pcv.

1st question: Doesn't that run a seperate sending unit for the gauge on the drivers side (motor) water jacket? Then your temp sensor is on the front of the manifold?
Btw- i had an 87 with that same problem-irritated the sh*t out of me. I replaced the same things. Things to check: 1) Vacuum leaks 2) Injectors-are they drowning or leaning the motor? (so when your idle changes as you shift the motor gets drowned.) If all else fails you can do two things. give the computer a "hard boot" by disconnecting the neg. battery cable and touching it to the pos. cable(which is still on batt) for 10 secs. this should boot the computer back to basic tables. Last resort- being that there is no idle screw... bend the throttle bracket to boost the idle. |
