I own ( thank GOD it is paid for) 99 F150 with a 5.4. This truck has had nagging problems since I purchased it and if it wasnt for the fact that it is paid for now, I probably would look for something else.
First and most improtant question. The truck will start but will not idle. If I put my foot on the accelerator it will run at higher RPM's. As soon as I release the accelerator it will die. I believe that I have fond the answer in another thread. Idle Air Control Valve. If this is the case, what is the location of this gremlin? Second question pertains to the odometer. Keep in mind this truck has had a history of electrical gremlins. The odometer will not stay lit. Sometimes t is on sometimes its not. No Pattern, however it still keeps up with the miles. I have done the basic checking for loose connections but I have not found anything. Thank You for your help. Jake |

Re: 99 F150 5.4 Runs will not idle, and odometer question
Jake,
The IAC is on the intake near where the throttle cable attaches. Please, do yourself a favor, get a OE replacement from you local stealership, or a NAPA store if that is all you have around. When you say the ODO does not stay lit, do the HVAC controls have light? |

I found the IAC later on that morning. I went to the stealership and they knew I was coming. They keep them up front under the parts desk. Apparently they are having a big run on them.
I will say that the truck runs better in all aspects. My thought was the valve was only for Idle. However, it seems to run better going down the highway. I would have some mornings that the truck just would not accelerate normally or going down the interstate I would have to use what I considered more than normal throttle pedal. Anyway it was an easy fix and buying it from the stealership only cost me $20 more than the local NAPA. As for the Odometer. It does it on its own. No other lights or systems seem to be affected. Night or Day. Sitting still or moving down the road. It just goes blank when it feels like it. All the oher lights work fine. Thanks |

Re: 99 F150 5.4 Runs will not idle, and odometer question
That is most likely a bad solder joint on the "board" that the ODO etc are on. It can be repaired, but you MUST be careful.

Ford F150. Brake lights and Odometer lights
Just reading your complaint about the odometer. Mine does the exact same thing. Sometimes it will be on, sometimes off. It keeps track of the mileage ok, but it seems to go out at the most unopportune times such as when I'm checking the mileage at an oil change.
I have another problem. My brake lights do not operate. I'm going to change the brake light switch on the brake pedal and if that doesn't work, I'm going to drive the truck off a cliff. The signal lights work fine, the hazards work fine, The cab mount brake light works fine, so whats the problem? It looks like the brake light shares the same wiring as the signal lights to the back, so could there be a problem with the signal light flasher under the dash. Does the brake light circuit go through the flasher before going out back? Any help would be appreciated. |
