I have a 98 jetta that appears to have some kind of electrical issue. When the "brake" light appears on the dash (without having the emergency brake on) my headl/running lights and windshield wipers do not work. When the "brake" light goes off, everything appears to work fine. It makes for an interesting trip in the night and the rain. Any suggestions where to start on this besides the VW shop? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Re: 98 Jetta issue with wipers and running/headlights
I'm not sure how it would relate to the wipers, but it sounds like the switch at the handbrake might not be working properly.

Check To See If There Are Any Blown Fuses. Ive Seen Similar Concerns Due To A Blown Fuse For What I Think Was The Cigar Lighter. There Was Also Concerns Of Loose Or Bad Connections At The Cigar Lighter. But Again Check The Fuses First And Let Us Know What You Find.

I am not sure how it relates to the windshield wipers either, but I found out last night that it also affects the AC, heater, defroster, blower too. It rained today, so I have the Jeep
I am checking on the fuse aspect (it might take a couple of days) and will let you know. Thanks for your suggestions!!!

Well I have determined it is the ignition switch. If I jiggle the key while it is in the ignition, the headlights go on and off. I suppose that means replacing the ignition switch. At least I know what it is and can address it from that angle. Thanks for your help guys, I do appreciate it!!

I switched out the ignition switch today and all is good in my "Jetta World". I just want to thank all who helped....I know more about the insides on my steering column than I ever thought I would. Much appreciated!!!
