Unhappy 1993 Camry has a knock...

I have a 1993 Toyota Camry LE. There is a knocking noise in the engine. Some people say that the engine(heads, rods, Crankshaft, etc...) has gone bad. In the same statement they ask about my oil level and if I change my oil. My oil was fine, and the car never put out any smoke. Any one have any suggestions?

How many miles? My rod bearing went south at 271,000 miles.
It was knocking pretty bad!

If it's the rod bearing, you will have to take apart the lower end and see the condition of all the bearings. Replace any that are bad and hope there is no other problem found. As long as you don't have to pull the crankshaft, it's not too expensive.

Lower Engine Repair Huh!?!? I can probably fix that myself. I have the complete teardown "Haynes Repair Manual". Can I take the oil pan off to get to the bearings? If not, can someone give me a starting point?
Thanks Brian...

O.K. I've taken off the Oil Pan And the ?Baffle Plate? there was 2 scratches on the top side of the plate. They look like the crank was hitting it in these spots. Any suggestions? The gashes don't look bad, but I'm trying to figure out what causes this to happen... Someone help me please...

I would just make sure the baffle plate isn't bent. This is not your major problem. Check the rod bearings one by one and replace any that don't look beautiful. Use micrometers and recommended clearances to determine the bearing that fits correctly. Second best is plastigage. Take diameters at a couple places 90 degrees from one another. Make sure the corresponding crank journals are mirror finish. If everything looks beautiful, you will have to look further. I guess the next place to look is the pistons and wrist pins. Much bigger job.
