Question Tachometer Wiring, Avoiding Adapter

does anyone know how to hook up a tachometer in a 1994 cavalier 2.2 without using a adapter. the tach has 4 wires, red (power), Black (ground), yellow (dimmer or whatever) and Green. i lucked out with routing things through my firewall because i put the tach in a peice of black wood and put it whre my radios at, and my radio where my cup holder is. so i just connected all the wires with my radio harness. except the lead. ive been to 5 differnt websites reading all the threads about installing tachs in cavaliers. none of the help. so if anyone has a working tachometer in there cavalier and didn't use an adapter, please help out.

Re: Tachometer Wiring, Avoiding Adapter

My mechanic said there is a tach wire in the dash but it's just not used in autos, but it's still there. I don't know but it might help.

No, that's an on or off signal for the light, I'm guessing your cavy has no tach in the dash? Some did but most don't, if your's has one you could use that wire for the green, if you feel like taking apart the dash. I have never installed a tach but my guess is the yellow wire is for the backlight/power switch in the tach, just tap into an ignition wire so it comes on with the key and doesn't drain your battery. Looks like you have that done right. Does the tach light up when you turn the ignition on?

Re: Tachometer Wiring, Avoiding Adapter

Jayson,

Wish all 2nd gens had tachs, do all 3rd gens have a factory tach?

Like I said, I think there is a wire in the dash used for the few 2nd gens that had tachs. Not even sure if it exists but worth a try. If you don't feel like pulling the dash apart yet, get a Haynes manual or something, if you find that wire let me know, I want a tach on mine! Good luck
