filters

I would like to know if there are more filters, etc. that I can change myself? I hate paying the guy at the oil change place. My Plymouth Voyager had a breather filter (I think that's what is was called) that I changed in addition to the air filter. I am eager to learn about car care.

Thanks

Elizabeth

Re: filters

Filters.

My '96 does not have a breather filter....The breather is on the front valve cover....The PCV valve is on the back valve cover.

Oil filter...Stay away from the cheaper line of FRAM.....The X2 that comes in a can in OK.
I use WIX.....But brand input is just my opinion.
I change my oil and filter every 3K miles.....and use Mobil 1.
That is overkill

Fuel Filter...you need a special plastic fuel filter disconnect.....they are sold in a set of various sizes....and you need to use the 3/8" one for the Ford 5/16" line (that is per the instructions with my set).....You MUST release the fuel pressure before changing the fuel filter!!!! The fuel pressure release on my '96 is on the fuel rail.....front center of the engine. Catch the fuel that you release.
Fuel filter is under the car...just in front of the driver side rear wheel....on the inside of the frame member.

Visit www.autozone.com for free repair information.
They also have a link to www.alldatadiy.com which is a subscription based service.

Is a good idea to run a fuel system cleaner through on a regular basis....I use Redline that can now be bought at Advance Auto Parts in my area.
Will take care of the normal varnish buildup that comes with gasoline usage.

There is also a "sock" filter over the fuel intake in the gas tank....but requires removal of the gas tank to get at.....normally only replaced when the fuel pump is replaced....not a regular change item.

There is a filter in the tranny......easy to change....should be done as part of the fluid change that is to be done every 30K miles.

It may have a cabin air filter also. This is located in the cowl area on the passenger side. It can be purchased at most auto parts stores. It is expensive from Ford ($28) though.
