Tranny question

I just picked up a 93 SE with an automatic transmission problem. I was hoping I could fix it up quick, but...

The car wasn't making it out of first gear and was making whirling sound. Anyway, I dumped and drained the fluid and replaced the filter. The fluid was a bit burnt (ok, more than a bit) and was almost half empty. Once bolted back together the car drove much better and the sound was gone, but after 2nd gear it just released. Anyone have a thought?

This is the first time I have ever changed a tranny filter, so I am unclear on what I am to look for in the bottom of the pan. If I am to look for pieces of metal, I'm ok, but there was an inordinate amount of metal sludge the consistancy of rock polishing grit accumulated around the magnets.

Is the tranny worth saving or should I find another?

If I have to pull the tranny, do I also have to pull the motor?

With burnt oil, theres a good chance you have internal problems. It could be lots of things, could be the gears, clutches, etc. Your best bet is to go to a local shop that works on trannys and ask them for an estimate (my dad co-owns a tranny shop and they give free ones)


Any other questions feel free to ask, I got knowledge of trannys (I fully rebuilt my 89 probe's tranny and put in a shift kit)

I checked all connections I could find tonight and basically the same, except I turned of OverDrive and it seemed to slide into 3rd while I was coasting (going by the RPM of the engine), but slipped out as soon as I gave it gas. The car needs a tune-up, but until I find out for sure about the transmission, I'm going to hold off.

If you found sludge or metal pieces in the tranny oil pan, I'd def get it in to see whats up...Waiting will just cause more problems and can rack up a bill of around 2000$ for a hardcore rebuild of the trans.
