Snap Sound on Downshift in AutoTrans
Hi,
In my 85 Chevy Caprice I sometimes get a snapping sound ( a single sound that you can hear and even feel slightly) when braking, and the trans is shifting from 3rd to 2nd gear. Happens sometimes going from 2nd to 1st also. Only happens after trans is warmed up, about 15 minutes of driving. The trans mount does not have both bolts all the way in. The mech who installed the trans mount said he couldn't get one of the bolts all the way in ! But that was about 6 months ago, and the snap sound just started a week ago. Any ideas welcomed ! Thanks |

Re: Snap Sound on Downshift in AutoTrans
Check that bolt again, or add some washers to make it grab something. I had a similar concern with my old boxy. It clanked when it went from 2nd to 1st at slow speeds. Turned out to be a worn out U-joint.
If you feel adventurous, you could also check the bolts that hold the torque converter to the flywheel. It sounds weird, I know, but I've seen it happen!

Thanks. Yeah, the front u-joint is only a couple years old, but trans fluid is drifting back onto it, so maybe the grease inside is getting contaminated. The u-joint has a grease fitting, but I can't get to it with my regular grease gun. Need to find a right angle fitting. No one sells them anymore !
Regarding the trans mount, the bolt is about 1/4 inch out. It feels like it is crossthreaded. It turns, but doesn't feel right. Maybe the trans is flopping around in this 1/4 inch clearance sometimes, and banging. Guess I could shim something in there. OK, time for me to get started on installing the new water pump ! Been putting it off long enough. |
