Broken Stud

I snapped one of my lugnut studs today. Is raplacing a stud hard to do? I have done it on a civic and had to raplace to wheel bearings. Will I have to do this? I broke the rear stud on my 91 240sx.

Does anyone know why the lugnut would bind on the stud?

just hammer it out and hammer in the new one.. why would you have to replace wheel bearing? its pretty easy

Becasue You Have To Remove The Hub/rotor On The Older Civics.... On The 240s The Rotor Indepedant Of The Hub.

I've replaced studs on many cars, all you have to do is remove the rotor, hummer the stud back, there is usually a place where you have enough space to push it back, so turn the hub till you get to that location, removing them is easy since they are shorter than the new ones, installing them usually requires you to find the right place for installation. Never have I come across a car that you have to weld in studs. Also once you place them in, they will be loose, use one of your lugs to pull it in by threading it. Once it is in somewhat enought, install the wheel and thread it in all the way. You might need the lugz that are open end on both sides for this though. Read the chilton manual, it always has some tips.

well iv broken studs before and every place i take it too says it will have to be welded on so......uhhh yea, im just waiting for my uncle to get his welder fixed.

You Don't Have To Weld Them On... They Do It To Prevent Warranty Work And So They Won't Be Liable For Damages.

welding them is an alternative to SHO411's suggestion.. he secures them with the lug nuts and others weld

i had to do it. just fuckin bang it out and put a new one on. then on the new one run a brand new lugnut down super tight...that will pull it in all the way. then youre good to go. i think it might not be too great for the wheel bearings in the hub but oh well (banging it out, that is)

welding in the studs is like safety wiring your bolt just make them more secure and a little stronger but if you weld the then break one off then your really fukd then you gotta grind off the back then hammer it out do this too many time and you will have to replace the hub.

Listen to me, welding is not the right way to install Lugz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I worked on cars, I'm not just guessing, there is a big reason they are poped in and out, they break, and if you weld them in, it's really gonna cost you if you ever break that particular lug again, and here goes another thing, to weld them in, they have to be first completely pushed in, to do this, you have to STILL use a lug OR completely remove the hub, and put it in a hydraulic press and press it in, this will be the only other solution. If you don't know shit about cars, mechanics will tell you a ton of crap just to rip you off, they know that if you can change your tire, you can change your lugz. Now unless you got an Enzo or Bentley which might have lugz that cost $30, and might require some process that I've never heard of, replacing lugz is as basic as changing a tire is from one car to the next, you hummer them out, then insert the new one, then thread it in with a LUG. This process has been the same on my dads 4WD rodeo, 93 Taurus, 95 T-Ram, and my S14.
Why don't you guys just invest $13, and get you a chilton Manual????????????? I'm telling you, half the shit you pay mechanics to do are so easy, it is as simple as figuring out how to screw a girl. Once you are naked, everything else is self explanatory by just looking at her and yourself.
Good example, my brother needed a new EGR valve on his 95 altima, at the dealer, I swear the diagnostic shit had it listed for $255 or $150 if he paid the $395 to also have his water pump changed. I don't have a diagnostic machine, that is why he was at the dealer, when I saw this I laughed, I took a 10mm wrech unbolted two nuts, and got the new one, and replaced it. took me no more than 5 min. He said if he knew that that was the EGR valve, he could have done it himself. I told him if he had just looked at the one in the box, he would have known. Now he owed me 30 bucks for a 5min Job. let him go with paying me 10 cuz I also did his water pump. Get a freaking chilton manual and read, it shows you step by step, and IT ALSO HAS PICTURES for the mechanical inclined.
