The 1986 MGM strikes again.
Well once again I am back with the tank.
Here is some history on the last project: http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=299401 Well with the help of a friend and some tight squeezing we finally got the 2nd bolt for the thermostat housing back on. (It took like 20 mins just to get it threaded....PITA with no room.) Well a new small problem has developed. Luckily it is nothing major I assume. Whenever I drive down the road I will hear a ticking coming from what sounds like from behind the dash. It will pick up its noise/frequency as I go faster, and when I am stopped it is quiet. I was wondering if it was something to do with the steering column, but a friend of mine told me it might be coming from something else. He said it might be from my speedometer cable. He said it might be rubbing or something when I increase in speed. Its like a ticking noise. Does anyone have any knowledge on this subject? I think its hooked to the transmission, but I have no clue where the heck I could access this cable if its the problem. Any help would be valuable. Thx. |

Re: The 1986 MGM strikes again.
Tik? At speed, is it tik...tik....tik...slow or tickatickaticka, kind of a continuous thing? Is it directly proportional to speed?
Check to see if you have the mechanical speedo cable or the electrical one. Look on the trans, if it's mech, it'll have a heavy (usually black) plastic cable about 1/4" thick running from off the transmission and going forward. If electrical, there will be only electrical hookups. With the mechanical setup, check to see if the cable is kinked or twisted along its length; that might cause a noise when driving; it could also be inside the speedo itself, so have a good listen, either while driving or with the back wheels jacked up (use caution of course) Of course there's plan "B": turn up the radio.
