Question look here another tranny problem

i recently attained a 1992 taurus and guess what the tranny has a problem HOWEVER i have not heard of this one befor heres the deal it will somtimes shift hard or take too long to shift or somtimes i think it shifts into the wrong gear cus it can be kinda sluggish after it shifts but the real kicker is that after driving for a while #1 the car likes to start in 2nd (i think) and (sometimes when its cold but normally hot) it wont shift into overdrive but the problem is gotten around by turning off the ignition while the car is still moving for a couple of seconds and then turning it back on after the car comes back on it will then shift into overdrive and cruise down the road i originally thought the tranny was going out the door like most of them do however with this turning-off-of-the-key-quick-fix it makes me think electrical problems but i dont know where to start a A LITTLE CAR INFO the car has 163000 miles on it the motor runs great everything works the car sat for the past year and a half but the problems started a long time befor that the transmission fluid apears to be quite burnt (im thinking the guy pulled his boat tooooo many times) im used to older non-computer cars but i think i can tackle this one by myself with a little direction if anybody could help PLLLEEEAAASSSEEE do so im very perplexed on this one thanx to all that read this

Re: look here another tranny problem

It is almost impossible to accurately diagnose a tranny problem without driving it, but I may be able to give you a hint. If it starts out in second gear, or seems to stay in second gear and can be changed by cycling ignition key, it sounds like it is in (limp-in mode). That is where an input is giving info to the PCM that is out of its factory preset range. The PCM recognizes this as a problem and sets the system in limp-in mode to alert the driver there is a problem. Take it to a reputable service center that specializes in transmissions. Could be a million things, but more than likely with burned fluid it needs a rebuild also. Just rebuilding it may not fix the problem, which is why I suggested taking it to a specialist. It may be a nightmare if you are not knowlegable in modern transaxles or even the problems, technical service bulletins and updates specific to that year and model of transmission.
