98 manual 3rd gear tough

I have a 98 Escort 5 speed manual and there are times I shift into 3rd gear only to let the clutch out to hear slight grinding. I cannot put it straight into gear (too much grinding) but have to come back to neutral and then can put it in gear. There have been times it also kicked itself out of gear, again, only 3rd. Any thoughts? Thanks.

just a thought maybe a linkage problem. If it was the clutch I think you would have it in all gears. I am so used to mine I don't even have to use the clutch. Just an idea though.

Thanks - I've never played with linkage before but may have to start. I also do not use the clutch much either and 3rd is sometimes a tough one to get.
