1989 century, a/c stuck in vent position

My airconditioning unit is stuck in the vent position....the slider slides all the way over to off, and back to "def" but nothing changes, the fan is always on......the cool - hot slider still works fan, but i can't turn the fan off....or turn the heater or a/c on at alll......Is this something i can fix, or do i need to take this in?

so i slid it back and forth hard a few times and got it to turn off.....i think i'm gonna take the unit out and clean it....hopefully it won't happen again
