Grinding noise when reversing??

Hi people. I am new around here and would really appreciate any help you can give me. I own a 95' Lumina with 115k that is starting to have some problems. Well, one specific problem. When I reverse there is a loud grinding noise from beneath the car. The noise stops if I press slightly on the breaks while backing up. This has been going on for a couple weeks and I really need to get something figured out. Jensen Tire replaced the breaks (which are supposedly guaranteed for life) when my parents drove this car. Do you think this noise is caused from my breaks? Or are my breaks OK since the noise does not happen while pressing the breaks? I would take it to the dealer if it is clearly not the breaks, but I am thinking about going to the service dept. of Jensen if there is much of a chance that it would fall under the guaranteed breaks. Please let me know what you think.

all help is appreciated,

Curt

EDIT: The loud noise is a shrieking / metallic kind of grinding noise. Just thought I should include that.

That noise, that goes away when the brake is applied, is one of the hallmarks of a sticking caliper, that is not fully releasing. If you have rear disc brakes, I'd bet it's coming from back there.

Hmm....maybe I will take my car into that place that guarantees the breaks and see what they have to say about it. I appreciate the info. I will post back when I get a chance to take it into the car shop.

I'd bet on brakes too.
