'99 Stratus 2.5 ltr V6 Opinions?

I just purchased this vehicle which has 101k mi on it. I know little about the pros and cons other than indicators on consumer reports. It has the manual/auto stick trans. Is it better to run it in auto or manual mode as far as stress upon it? I would like comments/feedback on this vehicle's reliability, known probs, recommendations for servicing. I noticed that CR's 2004 annual guide gave the trans a below average reliability mark (half black circle) . Don't know if there is more than the one trans with this 2.5 in '99? Also what is the recommendation for mileage change on the timing belt? I assume it is a belt and not chain...and has an interference head?
