Wheel Play

I have a 1990 Camry with 202,000 miles on it. The front wheels have alot of front to back play in them. When you push the tire forward, the whole wheel can go forward a couple inches. I havn't done any maintenance to the suspension system. I'm sure its probably time. Also when you push down on the front of the car it goes down pretty far.

I am most concerned about the front to back play in the front wheels. What could this be?

Struts and likely the upper strut mounts are needing replaced. Recommed you purchase OEM parts and make the car safe to drive right away.

Is changing struts and mounts something your average DIYer does or does he take it to the shop?

Do you have to get a 4 wheel alignment after replacing these components?

If you take it to a shop, what would be a good "chain" type store to take it to (Pep Boys, Midas, etc...)

I don't know what level of experience you have. I never done struts before, but have worked on other types of equipement all my life.

I purchased a Haynes manual for my Camry and followed their instructions with one exception. I took my old struts to a local garage and had them change the springs over to the new struts. Charge was of $45 for this service. But worth every cent when you consider the potential danger if one of these springs flew off when changing them over.

I did the rear struts first because the installation looked less complicated. The the following weekend did the front. I used all OEM parts.

Yes, you will need a front and rear alignement. Mine drove just fine after I changed the struts so I waited until tire replacement. But I could tell by the tire wear the camber (sp?) was out and the outside edge of the tire was showing faster wear then before.

I took it to Toyota to just quickly look it over. I didn't have time for them to break it down and know for sure what is wrong.
But they said it definately isn't the struts or mounts and looks like the front wheel bearings are going out. Also, the grease has all leaked out because of broken boots.

I just wanted to know if the wheels are going to come flying off while driving? Both front wheels have the same problem. If you push forward on the front wheels they move forward & squeak, like there is alot of free play. If you pull the wheel in and out there is no free play. Just fwd/backwd free play of the wheel itsself.

I need to get the car up on jackstands to see whats happening. What should I look for when on the stands?
