Angry 96 Grand Voyager wipers on, switch off?

Ok I have two 96 Grand voyagers and both seem to have the same trouble!
My van has just started cycling the wipers uncommanded as well as not always parking after turning the switch off!
my wifes 96 has had the wipers running on their own for almost a year now! they come on intermittently! Anyone have this one?
Thanks friends!

Angry

I've had the same prob with my 96 voyager for a couple years now where the wipers will just come on by themselves, I think it's a loose connection in the control because when i twiste back on the control to put it more in the off position the wipers stop. Would love a solution to this prob that I could fix myself.

Re: 96 Grand Voyager wipers on, switch off?

the ghost wipers are common. Don't worry about it. It's just annoying, but you could get a worse wiper motor new in the box too.
The contact ring in the motor that sends the wipers to the 'home' position is dirty, if you tear it apart and clean it, it'll work right for six months or so and start it again.

everybody has this trouble.

Hey I used to own a '97 Voyager and had the same problem. Every once in awhile the wipers would make one or two swipes, really strange!

Hmm.. "ghost wipers", I like that term.

What about the wipers coming on when the turn signal is used?

Re: 96 Grand Voyager wipers on, switch off?

Timd,
Turn signal with wiper problem is the bad switch.

Ghost wiper problem doesn't relate to that, as whether they're on or off they just start wiping, or wipe more than once (sometimes lots!) when in pulse, stop in the middle of the windshield, or don't come on for the second or third timed pulse etc. Normally, we all grab the wiper control to try to undo whatever's gone wrong, but it clears up before we get to use the switch, hence Ghost Wipers!

This is also not related to the "clockspring" recall where your cruise control, horn, and Airbag all go screwy. Diam-Chryco will fix that for free... even out of warranty, no matter how many times or how long it is.

It's not a Bug it's a feature...

wiper switch problem

My wifes 96 has done the same thing, according to dodge it is the power distrubution module, (the fuse box under the hood and it's computer that cost 250.00 plus programing and installation fee) that is causing this problem.

Re: 96 Grand Voyager wipers on, switch off?

rdaniel911,
If you change the "power distribution module" under the hood and paid $250.00 for a "fuse box" you have just been bent over dude.... sorry.
It's not the problem.

Why would you still take a '96 to a D-C Dealer, anyway?
Oh, I see... you're a Ford man.....figures...

I'm not trying to be mean, they tried to tell my wife it was the body control computer in '97, and they wouldn't cover it under warranty, and, upon further investigation, I found that this eventually became a common problem, and the slip ring (home) switch in the wiper motor was the trouble all along.

save yourself the money. You can live with the Ghost wipers, they don't screw up that often.

Re: 96 Grand Voyager wipers on, switch off?

I am also having the same problem with the ghost wipers, but I am also having a ghost radio problem too. The radio display won't light up anymore. The radio itself comes on when it wants to, it will turn off when it wants to, I can't control the sound or anything. It just scares the living heck out us when it just comes on out of nowhere blaring and we can do anything about it. It will sometimes play the radio or a tape at it's convenience. When I turn the car on it does make sound like it is turning on. I replaced it with another radio, but am having similar problems with that one too. Could this problem be related?

Re: 96 Grand Voyager wipers on, switch off?

This is a common problem with many TSB's to fix this , first fix is replacing the turn signal stalk . If this doesn't work then replacing the wiper motor will fix it . Have never heard of this being any kind of computer problem . Did see one fix being a bad ground somewhere but don't know where .

Re: 96 Grand Voyager wipers on, switch off?

well.. at least I'm glad to hear (in a way) that I'm not the only one with this problem too
now I just have to figure out why one of my rear windows will only open once in a while.. faulty motor? bad switch? I replaced the motor with one from a wrcking yard.. and that one works a little more than the original... DOH!
