r/f window inop

new to this site and need help, 99 grand cherokee limited r/f window
will not work. when push either drivers or r/f window switch it clicks inside door. Would think it's getting power so I'm assuming the motor/regulator is bad. Dealer wants $300 plus to repair. Window motor and regulator come together for around $90 at dealer. Got panel off but need info if anyone has done it on getting old window motor/regulator out and back in.
thanks
joe

Joe, I have the same problem and here's my story so far if it helps.

I bought my 2000 JGC used and noticed the FPW didn't work. Since it was bought "as is" from a leasing company I couldn't ask them to take care of it. Before I had a chance to put it in the shop it started working by itself so I thought it was just stuck from sitting and was OK now.

After a couple of days it stopped working again. I hoped it would work again by itself but didn't. I bought a new motor/regulator at a local chain auto parts store for less than $100 and replaced it myself. It was a pain but definitely a do it yourself project with the manual (or notes off the internet) if you're mechanical at all. The tricky part is that the motor assembly is bolted inside the door and you have to reach through holes in the inner door frame to get to anything. After replacing the motor it worked great... for a couple of days, then stopped working again.

Last week, after listening to the clicking for a long time in hopes it would work again someday, I went to the local dealer. They said they thought it was the door panel switch assembly ($300.00) but they weren't sure and I couldn't return it if it wasn't the problem.

I went home and decided to take the door apart again and look for a loose connection or some other simple fix. Found no smoking gun, but with the door panel off the window started working again. I excitedly put the door back together and it worked fine... for a couple of days.

This is where I am now and why I came to this site looking for answers.

My theory:

The window or the cable is in a bind somehow and fooling with it releases the pressure long enough for the window to work until it gets in the bind again.

The clicking you hear is some sort of thermal breaker protecting the motor and other components because the window will not move.

Adjusting the motor and cable to some position where it is happy may be the only solution.

If I have to figure out how that cable works I'll just have to get rid of the Jeep.

I love my Jeep and with the exception of a couple of bugs like this it has really held up well. If you find out a "fix" for the window please let me know! Hope my experience is a piece of the puzzle for you.

Darrell

Re: r/f window inop

Happens to me about once every six months when it realy hot & dusty outside. the front pass. window would stay down. somehow when i wake up the next morning it fixes itself. im thinking temperature issue(Expansion/Contraction),or dirt restricting the motor, but mines a 93JGC. our Jeep Luck
